Tokyo Active NEETs

Tokyo Active NEETs is a very special group of musicians. They are special for several reasons:

  1. They are NEETs,
  2. who play anime music
  3. in cosplay.

First off, please listen to my husband’s (currently) favorite arrangement:

I am sure the video enticed you to learn more about this group. Definitely better than my writing would have.

Now you know I’m no music writer, so regarding the music I’ll just walk you through the most basic of basics. Tokyo Active NEETs are a fan group, who play jazz or rock arrangements of Touhou, other game, Vocaloid and anime music. They are lead by the pianist, Akai Ryu-sei. The other instruments include bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone or flute.

I wrote they were a fan group or a doujinshi group. That means that they do all the work behind the video performances and CDs themselves, without any professional help. (Although they are professionals themselves by now, since they have been at it since 2008. That’s 10 years. Do you feel old?)

Returning to my tiny list up there, I would like to explain the acronym NEET. A NEET is a person who is “Not in Education, Employment, or Training”. Instead of working or preparing for entering the workforce, they play music.

Tokyo Active NEETs started in 2008 (at Comiket 75) with Touhou music, but have since then branched out into other otaku (=anime, Vocaloid and game) music. For example the video above is from KanColle.

Third bullet point is the cosplay. As you can see in the photo and video performance above, they dress up in costumes. For example in the KanColle video performance, the drummer and the pianist are wearing admirals’ uniforms and ヒロコマン, the trumpet, is cosplaying Kaga. It has little to do with music, but it’s a nice touch.

In case you’d like to hear something more orchestra-like, let me introduce you to 交響アクティブNEETs. They are Tokyo Active NEETs’ sister group, established in 2014. They play the same tracks, but with violins, flutes, oboes and what-nots.

Hmm… not bad. Not bad at all. Reminds me of Platina Jazz.
